To grow grass or lay sod on the spot, you can ask for 6 to 8 inches. Also, Indiana 811 wants two working days' notice before any digging, and a grinder digs, so the locate request goes in first.
Grinding leaves the root plate to rot slowly. Removal digs out stump and main roots so something can be built or planted on that exact spot, and it leaves a much bigger hole. A dip that appears after the snow melts is what owners find in spring when nobody backfilled. I would most likely pay a few hundred bucks extra to get it ground out and the spot seeded, because I can't imagine a house that would look better with it left in, unless you're low on cash and just need to save some money.
Emerald ash borer is in all 92 Indiana counties, so most of the dead trees around here are ash. Wisconsin DNR notes that many companies keep climbers out of an ash with even 20% decline, so a dead ash often comes down from a lift or with a crane, because it's not safe for a person to climb it. An infested tree costs double to remove and a dead one triple, again because it's dangerous and delicate work. A dead tree near the house is worth pricing this season, before a storm brings it down and causes more damage, which would cost much more to take care of.
The storm of March 30, 2025 cut power to about 10,000 Mishawaka Utilities customers and brought trees down across the city. After a storm, the order of work depends on what each trunk is lying on. A trunk on a roof gets its weight taken off first. If a tree is touching a wire, we wait until the utility cuts the power, so there's no danger for our crew. Clearing takes out brush and saplings with a skid loader and a chipper and leaves ground ready to grade or seed. If the pile could be hazardous, or you don't have the time or the energy to do it yourself, then of course it makes sense to pay. But if you don't have any plans for the weekend, there's not much of it and it's easy to do, I think you can definitely save some cash and just do it yourself. A crane lifts a tree out in large pieces, which matters when a big trunk leans over a roof and there is no room to lower anything. The crane needs firm footing within reach of the tree, often the driveway. It costs more by the hour and usually saves days of climbing.

If a tree is in your own yard, it’s yours to cut and take care of, and the city asks for no application. But if the tree is in the tree lawn, between the sidewalk and the curb, it’s still the owner’s expense, but the city Board of Public Works controls it, so you need a permit for removal or any other kind of work. City crews also trim tree lawn trees that hang over the street, to 10 feet above the curb.
Inside the city, the power lines belong to Mishawaka Utilities, and it clears them itself, so you don’t need to handle that. A tree on the property line belongs to both neighbors.
